Pronoiac People
Whether artists, beekeepers, cadets, dressmakers, ethnographers,
flautists, giants, horticulturalists, igloo-builders, Jello-eaters,
kite-flyers, luminaries, mothers, nuns, oceanographers, Popes, quarry
women, rocketeers, scientists, temple sluts, universalists, Venusians,
wolverines, xylophonists, yellow beards or Zeus -- these folks
rock, a to z.
Rob no longer can afford the time-luxury of doing personalized horoscope readings, but he highly recommends his astrological colleague Ro Loughran That succulent wild woman SARK is out on the road to promote her new book, "Prosperity Pie." Urging readers to stop sweating the small stuff, SARK interviews such smarties as Rob in a quest to discover how to live with ease and joy, even if you have very little. Her monthly e-letter is also a graceful treat. Check it out. KATHERINE reminds that it's time to give another shout-out to Randy Cassingham's free e-newsletter, Heroic Stories. Katherine writes, "According to the Web site, their mission is 'restoring faith in humanity, one story at a time' and in the time I've been a subscriber, they have had a profound affect on me -- they have helped me to see how powerful the repercussions of even little acts can be, and have inspired me to try and treat others with kindness, no matter what the situation. I can truly say that these stories have helped me become a gentler, more compassionate person." Good enough! We also like Fluffy Singler's page. Contributor to the literary magazine Karawane, Fluffy is devoted to poetry and performance. HEATHER writes, "I submit Derrick Jensen -- an environmental activist and writer whose book 'A Language Older Than Words' consumed me and changed my world view forever; I was completely absorbed by it for days afterward -- something that hasn't happened since I was a teenager on the farm reading historical novels and dreaming of escape. It was more an experience than a book. We thank KRIS for alerting us to the right-livelihood intentions and modern ambitions of the late Scott and Helen Nearing, a pioneering couple whose dedication to living near to the land, near to their neighbors, and near to their art remains alive through the stewardship efforts of the volunteers collected at the Good Life organization. Kris writes, "Not only did they prove in unequivocal terms that self-sufficiency isn't only possible, it's simple (not easy, simple) -- but they both have left behind many books and essays reflecting their thoughts, feelings, and perspectives of the world we live in. While a lot was written from the '30s through the '70s, it's still applicable, especially given the current insanity. In my opinion, if more lived like Scott and Helen did, the world would be a very different, very spectacular place." How much did you tithe to charity last year? Intel founder Gordon Moore and his wife Betty gave and gave large, topping Philanthropy.com's list of 2001 givers. The Moores gifted some $6.13 billion-with-a-B in charitable contributions last year and still had enough left over to go out to the movies and dinner. There's a voyeuristic pleasure in reading about rich folks giving it away. Learn which did what: here. One of the main elements against which the concept of PRONOIA wages is the Genocide of the Imagination. Award-winning young adult author Philip Pullman ("The Golden Compass") is evidently an unknowing Pronoiac Warrior, as excerpted from his Carnegie Medal acceptance speech Read why Pullman worries that his own daemon might be a slug. MELODY nominates Raymond Kurzweil as a genius for the smart pronoia of his essay, The Law of Accelerating Returns. For our first Woman of the Year, we are humbled by the ongoing work, power, and vision of 90-year-old visual artist Louise Bourgeois. Neither age nor tragedy nor any of life's other trials have stopped her from working exactly as her soul dictates. We love the creamy goodness of old-pro Steve Gladstone. Seemingly specializing in black and whites of people, Gladstone also shoots the annual instant art nation of Burning Man, and offers an elegant portrait of the late artist Paul Bowles. And hey, speaking of Bowles, reader ANNETTE SOLYST traveled to Morocco with a stranger's innocent intention of meeting him. Armed only with good will and a desire to connect with one of her favorite writers, Solyst was lucky enough to obtain her perfect moment with the great man, in his own spider's house. We salute poet, novelist, renegade, radio essayist, bohemian, and a living example of an exquisite corpse, Andrei Codrescu. Hail to historian, scholar, and activist Howard Zinn. Rob's colleague, astrologer Antero Alli, offers timely astrological updates on the world around us, and is the co-creator of the Vertical Oracle cards that accompany most of Rob's horoscopes on this site. British rocker Julian Cope does more than sing silly love songs. Theravada Buddhist monk of the Thai Forest tradition and Abbot of the Dhammasala Forest Monastery near Perry, MI, Ahjahn Khemasanto has created a calm spot in an otherwise difficult world. Spearhead frontman Michael Franti manages to uplift and uphold whilst rallying against the societal and political injustices that surround us. John Bagby's Pronoia site beams the meme. Journalist Bill Moyers is an Unimpeachable Source As the creator of the Virtual Reality Modeling Language (VRML), Mark Pesce actually is a bonafide genius-type. Rob directs you to Mark's informative and thought-provoking Web site for a glimpse into his fevered world. Full of essays, intellectual papers, and interviews, this is a beneficial timewaster, easy to justify to boss and spouse alike. Consultant Joe Pruett, whose Q7 Web site often offers free hosting and consultation to worthy causes. Rob calls Erick Davis "One of the smartest people I've ever met, Erik is a prophetic genius who ranks up there with Robert Anton Wilson and Terence McKenna." Jon Hanna exposes the empyrean of visionary art. ZOE7 tangles electronic wires and neural nets, explaining how brain technology devices and pharmacological substances led him to the mind of God. This panel of elders restores faith in old-school psychedelia, with Michael Horowitz, Laura Huxley, Cynthia Palmer, Ann Shulgin,Alexander Shulgin, Huston Smith, and Myron Stolaroff discussing the wisdom of the ages, where religion and pharmacology trip the light fantastic. Archaya tells the truths to some. Columnist Molly Ivins is a national treasure. Columnist Arianna Huffington -- thank you for switching careers! Do you get enough sleep each night? Yeah, right. Your nocturnal submissions offer much insight into ordinary diurnal duties and you should pay more attention to them. Rob is especially hepped on the work of Gayle Delaney, a dream consultant and author with whom he worked when he was beginning his subconscious journeys. A little healthy parenting is definitely in order for all of us, whether you are a parent or just have some. Rob admires and has worked with Jeannine Parvati and Frederick "Rico" Baker, a couple who both teach astrology and intelligent middle way parenting paths. What to do with the uncanny void left by the demise of the World Trade Center towers? Folks seem evenly divided between rebuilding and allowing the emptiness to dominate. TIM SHAW has an idea he'd like to see erected on the site. Using the basics of color theory and a wise slice of geometry, Tim reasons his reasons here. Visionary activist Caroline Casey is a woman with a mission. Check in with writer and activist Farai Chideya. Learn more about Santa Fe artist Erika Wanenmacher.
